Mandate [MOLECULAR BIOLOGY & BIOTECHNOLOGY]

 

The Department is involved in research activities of communicable and non-communicable diseases. The Units in the Department comprise Molecular Epidemiology, Biotechnology and Haematology and Blood Disorders. The Department researches into the molecular epidemiology of diseases such as Helicobacter pylori, Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella typhi (the causative agent of typhoid fever), Enterohaemorrahagic E.coli (EHEC 0157:H7), and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.

At the same time, some local foods have been bioengineered to control and prevent diarrhoeal diseases, as well as improve the shelf life. The Department has also been involved in the local production of antisera against Neisseria meningitidis and ABO blood group. The Department has also been screening local fruits and vegetables for antioxidant properties. While conducting these researches, disease, status has been established and the appropriate local regimen effected. Proper and accurate diagnosis of disease has been established.

The Department has also been in collaboration with various local and international bodies such as Federal Ministry of Education, Health, FHI, Alexander von Humboldt (AvH), Germany, INSERM, France, TWAS and Roche, Centre of Proteomics and Genomics (CPG), Cape-Town, South-Africa, Universities at both National and International levels.
