The Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, his management and research team paid a visit to the Delta State Ministry of Health, the office of the Secretary to the Delta State government while on a visit to NIMR outstation at Asaba on the 8th November, 2024.
Prof. Rosemary Audu, Director of Research, NIMR and Professor of Medical Virology, Lead City University delivered her inaugural lecture titled "Challenges and Prospects of Laboratory Diagnostics in Africa: Disentangling the Puzzle" at Lead City, University, Ibadan.
Re-inauguration of NIMR Anti-Corruption & Transparency unit.
The Independent corrupt practices commission (ICPC) team visited NIMR on the 24th of June 2021 to re-inaugurate the institute’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency unit headed by Prof. Rosemary A. Audu.
The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) Viral Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF) Project, is an extramural research program designed to forge collaboration with Universities and allied Research Institutes. It seeks to understand the ecology of viruses associated with viral haemorrhagic fever and their hosts in order to develop an effective public health strategy for their control in Nigeria. The main goal of this project is to characterize major viruses associated with VHFs, provide information on main reservoirs of infection in VHF-prone areas and train a crop of young scientists in support of the National Control Program.
NIMR VHF Scholars
Each prospective NIMR VHF scholar must submit a grant application which will be assessed and the best scoring application will be awarded the extramural grant.
Eligibility Requirements:- Each candidate must:
Have registered for MSc or Ph.D. at the University of Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Lead City University, or Delta State University. Be interested in working on VHF for the postgraduate program; Submit a summary of the approved research proposal plus budget (Maximum – six pages) Provide a letter of support from the University Supervisor
Grants will be awarded on a competitive, peer-reviewed basis, and will be based on the feasibility of timely completion of the program. Grants of N400, 000 – N750, 000 each will be awarded to successful applicants. The grant will support fieldwork and laboratory activities.
Successful applicants will be required to submit quarterly updates and summary reports to NIMR Grants Management office and to the VHF Research Team, and present their research findings at the Institute’s annual scientific conference. They are also encouraged to publish in the Nigerian Journal of Clinical and Biomedical Research, NIMR official Journal.

The Vice-chancellor, Trinity University, Prof. Charles Korede Ayo and Dr. Modupeade Adetunji, Ag. Dean, Basic Medical & Applied Sciences, Trinity University visited NIMR on 17th August 2021 to deliberate on research and academic collaborations with the institute.
The collaboration and MOU will provide NIMR research staff the opportunity of adjunct research positions in the university.
MTN Foundation (MTNF) donated an Oligo-Synthesis machine to the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) on Friday, 13th of August, 2021. This is in furtherance of MTN Nigeria’s corporate social responsibilities and interest in fostering health research in Nigeria.
The MTN Foundation (MTNF) donated Oligo- synthesizer and Laboratory was commissioned by the Honorable Minister of State for Health, Senator (Dr.) Olorunnimbe Mamora. According to him, Nigeria is poised to contribute remarkably to public health response, research, and development.
The MTN Foundation (MTNF) donated Oligo- synthesizer equipment capable of making short synthetic DNA or RNA copies of organisms and produce genetic materials to aid molecular and synthetic genetic testing, forensic research, and applications in vaccine and drug development, nutrigenomics, local design, and development of diagnostics and many more uses in research and development.
According to the DG-NIMR Prof. Babatunde Lawal Salako, the Oligo-Synthesis machine donated by MTN Foundation is indeed not only for research in NIMR but for the benefit of extending the frontiers medical research and services in Nigeria and the West African region. He thanked MTN Foundation and MTN Nigeria for boasting Nigerian researchers’ capacities in medical diagnostics, and experimental vaccine and drug development.
