Centre for Infectious Diseases Research
CIDR is one of the three centers in the Microbiology Department. We perform basic, translational, and clinical research focusing on the transmission dynamics, evolution, immunology, and control of infectious diseases among human populations, animals, and the environment, in accordance with “One Health” approach.
CIDR collaborates with relevant stakeholders to monitor, track and control public health infectious disease threats, both nationally and internationally. We also conduct training workshops for medical health professionals, mentor PhD, MSc, and undergraduate students and provide bench spaces for researchers, post graduate and undergraduate students. We also operate microbial repositories for research and academic purposes.
We achieve our goal through our three research groups:
- Bacteriology group: Conducts research on bacterial infections of public health importance, with focus on microbe-host interactions, bacterial pathogenesis and their role in various ecosystems. We as well play a crucial role in public health surveillance and response.

- Parasitology group: Specializing in parasitic immunogenetics research, this group investigates host genetic dynamics in malaria and other infectious diseases, conducts genomic surveillance of antimalarial drug resistance, field evaluation of diagnostic devices for parasitic infections, characterizes the etiology of various fever-inducing pathogens, and evaluates diagnostic devices for parasitic infections in collaboration with the relevant organization. We are open for collaboration with relevant organization for research, clinical trials and capacity development.

- Immunology group: Conducts research on immunological markers of diseases of public health importance.

Ebelechukwu E Afocha PhD
Research Scientist & Head
Dr. Afocha is a Research Scientist and has been conducting research on Infectious Disease Epidemiology. She has research interest in exploring the mechanism of pathogenic infections in children, especially the under-five and use of molecular tools for diagnosing, monitoring and tracking infections. She is passionate about translating and disseminating research outcomes to relevant stakeholders for the prevention and control of diseases of public health importance.
Over these years, Dr. Afocha has gained a wealth of experience in Research Project Management: Research Ethics and Quality Management System (QMS). She has received some bursary award to present some of her research findings in International and Local conferences including Bursary Award for Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Scientific Conference: Applied Bioinformatics and Public Health Microbiology (Hinxton, Cambridge, United Kingdom).
She also has membership of some International and Local Professional Bodies including Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH), Applied Microbiology International (AMI) and Academic Staff Union of Research Institutes (ASURI).
