ECEWS Donates Medical, Office Equipment to NIMR to Boost HIV Response in Lagos

The Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS), through the United States Government–funded Accelerating Control of the HIV Epidemic in Nigeria (ACE-5) project, has donated medical and office equipment to the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) to strengthen HIV service delivery in Lagos State.

The presentation, held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at NIMR, Yaba, was led by the ECEWS Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andy Enyo, accompanied by the ACE-5 Chief of Party, Dr. Adeoye, Deputy Chief of Party, Dr. Otoyo, and other members of the Lagos project team.

Items donated included laptops, desktop computers, printers, split air conditioners, digital thermometers, stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors, a pediatric weighing scale, a wheelchair, and other high-tech equipment.

Receiving the items, NIMR Director-General, Professor John Oladapo Obafunwa, commended ECEWS and the ACE-5 project team for the strategic support, which he said would boost the institute’s capacity as a medical research centre and treatment facility.

“This gesture will go a long way in enhancing the effective delivery of antiretroviral therapy (ART) services in Lagos State and advancing our collective goal of controlling the HIV epidemic,” Obafunwa noted.

The donation is part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NIMR and ECEWS under the U.S. Department of State–funded ACE-5 Project. As part of the handover, each piece of equipment was demonstrated to NIMR’s technical team to ensure proper use and maximum impact.

According to ECEWS, the intervention underscores its commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and improving the quality of HIV care and treatment services in Nigeria.
